Sivan Korn is one of the 36 newest members elected to The American Law Institute. “This is an enormous honor for Sivan,” said fellow RL&L Partner, Hon. J. William Brammer, Jr., Ret. “She is most certainly the right person to take on the sometimes difficult but extremely important work of the ALI.”
The American Law Institute (ALI) is a private, independent, nonprofit research and advocacy group of judges, lawyers, and legal scholars established in 1923 to promote the clarification and simplification of United States common law and its adaptation to changing social needs, to secure the better administration of justice, and to encourage and carry on scholarly and scientific legal work.
The ALI drafts, approves, and publishes Restatements of the Law, Principles of the Law, Model Codes, and other proposals for law reform to further the mission to clarify, modernize, or otherwise improve the law to promote the better administration of justice. ALI’s founders identified two chief defects in American law: its uncertainty and its complexity. They noted that these defects cause useless litigation, often make it difficult to advise persons of their rights and create delay and expense after litigation begins. Since its founding in 1923, ALI has sought to provide a resource to the legal profession, legislatures, and courts to alleviate these concerns.
Membership in the American Law Institute consists of eminent judges, lawyers, and law professors from all areas of the United States and from many foreign countries, selected based on professional achievement and demonstrated interest in improving the law. New members must be proposed by an existing member, who writes a letter of recommendation, and seconded by two others. Proposals are evaluated by a Membership Committee that selects members based on demonstrated excellence in the law, high character, ability to contribute to the work of the Institute and those committed to its mission.
